Witness the artistic expression of four members of San Diego’s premiere professional dance company, Malashock Dance, as they come together to present, "Propulsion."
Malashock Dance company members Blythe Barton, Andrew Holmes, John Paul Lawson, and Lara Segura present "Propulsion;" an impactful dive into life’s journey and personal relationships as told through dance.
These four unique voices come together to present an evening of emotional strength and resilience through riveting choreography in the intimate setting of the Abbe Wolfsheimer Studio at Malashock Dance.
John Paul Lawson demonstrates technical prowess as his dancers sweep the stage with big flowing movement. Dusk to Dawn is a soft, athletic work that depicts the journey one takes to find light in dark times. Lawson’s choreography, set to a beautiful track by Abel Korzeniowski (originally from the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack) is inspired and driven. His newest piece Running is about the internal struggles one faces inside intimate relationships. This piece visits the dynamic forces between two people that bring them together, or drive them apart.
Blythe Barton will present two works that showcase the dynamic range of her choreography. From aggressive, hard-hitting movement to intimate gestured moments, her dancers tell vibrant stories with their bodies. Intricate patterns and layered choreography shift from forceful to tender to vigorous to sensitive.
Andrew Holmes touches upon the experience of inequity in contemporary society and the emotions that are tied to feeling rejection. His work is guided by the personal inner dialogue we all have when processing damaging events and the comfort and strength that we can find when we expose our true selves to those that will support us.
Lara Segura presents two dance works that offer countering views on the motivating forces that progress us through life. The thrilling music of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross set the tone for Cracked & Breaking (2012). This West Coast premiere is a hair-raising glimpse into the fear of the unknown and the sheer will to persevere. In NRE & Other Issues, Segura utilizes spoken work and a musical tapestry by Rene Aubry and Zoe Keating to weave together whimsically awkward interactions that create a light-hearted, colorful depiction of the insecurities individuals face in new relationships.
“Propulsion” promises an exciting journey through the many facets of life and personal relationships. Audiences will witness an array of human emotions, such as anticipation, perseverance, compassion, and joy. Musically driven choreography will highlight the strength and agility of some of San Diego’s elite professional dancers, as they articulate these emotions with authenticity and grace.
